Lalun Naturals
West Hollywood, CA Lalun Naturals

Maggie's beautiful skincare line Lalun Naturals borrows the name Lalun from a village in the mountains of Iran, where she spent many happy weekends as a child. The word 'Lalun' also hides the word 'Lune' which means moon in French, evoking the cyclical effects of the moon and embodying Maggie's philosophy of connecting with nature and formulating products for each season of the year. As the seasons change, so do the needs of our skin, and the luxuriously effective products in this line are impeccably designed to meet those needs.

If we had to choose one favorite skincare product from this line, it would be the Moon Butter included in our February Box. Made with exotic butters and organic as well as wildcrafted plant extracts, it is one of our favorite winter treats for the face (applied after spritzing her fragrant Winter Rose Toner). We also highly recommend her Restore Serum. Maggie Mahboubian is a gifted perfumer and we can't get enough of her perfume Qajar Rose, a poetic tale told in creamy notes of roses and saffron.

In Maggie's own words : "I use ingredients that I love: wild, raw, edible, seasonal, organic and fair trade. They are as close to their origin as possible and safe, especially during manufacture since I am the skin chef who's making everything. As with food, seasonal, fresh, quality ingredients make all the difference which is why the botanicals I extract are either wild-grown in my biodynamic garden in West Hollywood or ethically wildcrafted by myself from pristine sources in the Hudson Valley where I spend my summers. The essential oils I source are distilled from wildcrafted plants and enhance the benefits of my freshly extracted botanicals."

What is your favorite thing about being a small business owner

What I love most about being an independent small business owner is the variety of challenges and shifting ground. I wear many hats, but I can’t do everything at the same time, so I work in cycles. This seems very natural for me as a woman and as one who observes the rhythmic cycles of nature. Things are always changing and that’s a good thing, it keeps me nimble. Because there are so many details and threads to weave, I find there’s no distinction between work and life. When I’m not actively making or doing, I’m passively thinking and resolving. I even analyze my dreams and I always pay attention to the first thought that pops into my head when I wake up in the morning. It’s my call to action. I keep a journal so I can jot down thoughts, ideas and sketches, no matter how crude. I even keep a small notebook in my car. I’ve even been known to scribble down notes while driving!

When you are not making delicious potions for Lalun Naturals, where can we find you?

I love my early morning and late night walks with my dog. It’s my chance to have a little “me” time where I gaze up at the sky and feel connected to my inner self before heading back to my other career as wife and mother where you’ll find me researching nutrition, food shopping, preparing meals, cleaning dishes, doing laundry, chauffeuring, housekeeping. Keeping my house in order helps keep Lalun on track.

What's a super power you'd love to have?

If I had a super power, I’d want to be "Power Planter”! I’d make sure every single parking lot in Los Angeles would have native shade trees planted along the meridians. I’d transform lawns into productive gardens and make sure hillsides were secured with erosion control plants such as vetiver (the roots are extracted for perfumery). “Power Planter’s” signature would be any fragrant sage, artemisia, jasmine or rose.

A fun fact about you?

I prefer beer over wine!
